SEO Consultant
Role Overview
We are looking for an experienced, commercially minded SEO Consultant to lead and improve organic search performance across our digital presence.
The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of modern SEO, combining technical SEO, content strategy, digital PR, data analysis, user experience and AI-driven search. They should be comfortable working with both traditional search engines and the rapidly evolving landscape of AI-generated search results and answer engines.
This is a hands-on role requiring someone who can identify opportunities, develop practical strategies and demonstrate measurable improvements in organic visibility, traffic, leads and revenue.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and execute comprehensive SEO strategies aligned with business objectives.
Conduct technical SEO audits and identify issues affecting crawling, indexing, performance and organic visibility.
Perform keyword, topic and search-intent research to identify high-value opportunities.
Develop content strategies based on search demand, customer journeys and commercial priorities.
Optimise existing website content and identify opportunities for new content.
Monitor and improve organic rankings, traffic, conversions and other relevant KPIs.
Analyse competitors and identify opportunities to increase market share in organic search.
Work closely with content, development, UX, marketing and commercial teams.
Use analytics and SEO data to turn insights into clear recommendations and actions.
Monitor changes in Google's search results, algorithms and ranking systems.
Understand and optimise for emerging AI search and answer-engine environments, including how brands and content are represented in AI-generated results.
Identify opportunities around structured data, entities, topical authority and semantic search.
Support digital PR and link-building strategies where appropriate, focusing on relevance, authority and genuine value rather than low-quality link acquisition.
Produce clear SEO reports that demonstrate business impact rather than simply reporting rankings.
Prioritise SEO activity based on expected commercial impact, effort and opportunity.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
3+ years' professional SEO experience, preferably in an agency, consultancy or commercially focused in-house environment.
Demonstrable experience developing and implementing SEO strategies.
Strong understanding of technical, on-page and off-page SEO.
Experience conducting technical SEO audits and working with developers to resolve issues.
Strong knowledge of keyword research, search intent, content optimisation and information architecture.
Experience using tools such as Google Search Console, Google Analytics/GA4, Screaming Frog, Semrush, Ahrefs or equivalent platforms.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret large datasets and identify actionable insights.
Experience measuring SEO against meaningful commercial KPIs such as leads, sales, revenue or customer acquisition.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to explain technical SEO concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
Experience working with CMS platforms such as WordPress, Shopify or similar.
Good understanding of HTML, CSS and JavaScript as they relate to SEO.
Knowledge of website performance, Core Web Vitals, mobile SEO and modern web architecture.
Modern SEO & AI Experience
The successful candidate should also understand how search is evolving beyond traditional ten-blue-link results.
Experience or strong working knowledge of the following would be highly desirable:
Generative AI and AI-powered search.
Google AI Overviews and other answer-engine experiences.
Optimising content for visibility and citation within AI-generated answers.
Entity SEO and knowledge graphs.
Structured data and schema markup.
Topical authority and semantic relationships.
Brand visibility across search, social and third-party platforms.
AI-assisted content workflows, with appropriate human oversight and quality control.
Understanding how AI-generated content can affect search quality, originality and brand credibility.
Desirable Qualifications
Formal qualifications are less important than demonstrable results, but the following would be advantageous:
Degree or equivalent experience in Marketing, Digital Marketing, Communications, Business, Computer Science or a related discipline.
Google Analytics or equivalent analytics certification.
SEO-specific qualifications or recognised industry training.
Experience with SQL, Python or data analysis would be beneficial but is not essential.
Experience with Looker Studio, Power BI or similar reporting platforms.
Personal Attributes
We are looking for someone who is:
Commercially minded – understands that SEO exists to support business outcomes, not rankings alone.
Analytical – comfortable working with data and testing assumptions.
Curious – keeps up with changes in search, technology and consumer behaviour.
Strategic and practical – able to develop a strategy and then turn it into an actionable plan.
Technically confident – comfortable discussing SEO issues with developers and technical teams.
Creative – able to identify new content, digital PR and search opportunities.
Communicative – capable of presenting complex findings in a clear, concise way.
Experiment-focused – willing to test, measure and adapt rather than relying solely on established SEO practices.
Evidence of Success
Candidates should ideally be able to demonstrate previous results such as:
Growth in qualified organic traffic.
Increased organic leads, sales or revenue.
Improved visibility for commercially important search terms.
Successful technical SEO projects.
Successful content-led SEO campaigns.
Recovery from significant organic traffic or ranking declines.
Growth in organic market share against competitors.
Successful SEO migrations or website launches.
Improved visibility across emerging AI/search experiences.
Candidates should be prepared to explain what they did, why they did it, how they measured success and what commercial impact it produced.
What We Are Not Looking For
We are not looking for someone whose approach to SEO is limited to:
Producing lists of keywords.
Writing large volumes of generic AI-generated content.
Building links purely for quantity.
Reporting ranking positions without considering business outcomes.
Following outdated SEO tactics without testing their effectiveness.
Treating SEO as a standalone marketing activity disconnected from brand, content, UX and commercial objectives.
The ideal candidate understands that modern SEO is a combination of technical excellence, high-quality content, authority, user experience, data, brand visibility and an understanding of how search technology is evolving.
